Our second Designer Residency features the well read, well respected and much sought after skills of Karie Westermann.

Saturday 9th June
10.30am – 4.30pm

Full day class with breaks for refreshments and lunch.

Shetland lace sounds daunting but in this workshop Karie will teach you how to apply this technique to make a hap shawl. Together you will explore the different techniques used: picking up the stitches; reading and understanding a lace chart; how to knit an applied edge.
We’ll talk different lace traditions and how best to ‘hack’ a lace shawl. You’ll also get a chance to look at some stunning samples whilst you crack the code!
Bring: 4mm needles, circular at least 60cm length or straights
4 ply yarn containing at least 50% wool
5 stitch markers
Skill level: intermediate; confident with knit, purl, knit two together, yarn overs, casting on and off. No previous lace experience required.

Why not pick up a technique that will transform how you think about stranded knitting?
In this class you will learn an efficient and practical way of knitting with two colours at the same time.
Karie will teach you:
How to knit colourwork holding the yarn in two hands
How to keep your yarn floats correctly tensioned
How to control colour dominance
How to speed up your colourwork knitting
Colour planning

This class includes instructions on how to combine continental with the standard throwing technique and is suitable for people who knit either way.
There will be plenty knitted samples for inspiration.
Bring: 4mm needles – you’ll be working back and forth as well as in the round with small circumference so bring your preferred needles for this
DK weight yarn in two colours, 50g of one colour, 25g of another – yarn must be wool or predominantly wool
Sewing up needle
2 stitch markers
Skill level: intermediate; comfortable knitting in the round and able to follow a simple colourwork chart
